Our Accomplishments

Our Accomplishment

January 2, 2016 marks one year since I implemented this organization "Immigrant Women's Alliance at York University". Facebook was the first place I published and promoted the idea of this organization. However, when I was creating this profile a year ago I never knew that this organization will grow to this height within few months. As a leader, I have gained a great deal of valuable experience in the area of community organizations and leadership roles. I'm very grateful for all we have accomplished so far. And I will like to thank all the people and members of Intellectual Women's Alliance for supporting and believing in me all these months. Thanks to York University for approving this organization for us! By Nekpen Obasogie

Workshop at FCJ Refugee Centre

Our Accomplishment

On September 11th, 2015, we attended a workshop at FCJ Refugee Centre. It was indeed a remarkable event in the history of our organization. We had the opportunity to meet some new immigrant women in the centre. The women said our presentation gave them some sense of courage and hope in navigating the educational system in Canada. Specifically, one of the women was previously a Lawyer in her country before she migrated to Canada in 2015. Unfortunately, her foreign credentials have little or no value in Canada, because she came from a non-English speaking country. According to her words, she is currently upgrading her English language skills in one of Toronto's Adult Learning Centres. We wish her the best in her studies.

IWA organization at York University is very dedicated to empowering new immigrant women into the Canadian school system. And also assist these women to successfully integrate into the mainstream society.

About Us

The Immigrant Women’s Alliance (IWA) is an organization founded to educate and empower women, especially immigrant women, in pursuing education and fulfilling their potential. By creating a safe space for sharing knowledge and experience, we seek to motivate women to embrace an optimistic outlook, overcome barriers and take advantage of new opportunities. We visit places such as women’s shelters, immigration centres, adult learning programs and ESL schools in order to reach out to women and encourage them to embrace the educational opportunities that are available in Canada

Founder's Statement

Objectives

The Immigrant Women’s Alliance (IWA) was founded to inform and empower women, especially immigrant women arriving in Canada, about the importance of education. We provide a safe space for women to share their educational experiences and wisdom with each other. We believe that education provides women with the opportunity for personal and professional growth, enables them to set a positive example for their children, and makes them into contributing members of Canadian society. Education also gives women the enhanced social awareness they need to make informed decisions about their lives, the lives of family members, and wider community life in Canada.

Many women arriving in Canada from other countries face multiple adjustment and integration challenges based on language, culture, beliefs, and social gender norms. In some cultures, women are confined to inferior roles and excluded from participating in the workplace and public sphere. These women have a great deal of unrealized potential. It can be difficult adjusting to the many opportunities available in Canada and we try to assist women in embracing new opportunities, especially in the area of education, and developing their potential to the fullest.

The guiding vision behind the Immigrant Women’s Alliance seeks to create a safe space where women with experience in the educational system can share their wisdom and knowledge with other women. The goal is to encourage and inspire women to overcome the barriers to education and work hard to fulfill their dreams. IWA believes that education enables women to play leadership roles in their families, the workplace, and society.
